College Reorganization Approved

The proposal to reorganize the College into four schools from the present structure of seven departments has been approved by Chancellor Walter Wendler.

The School of Allied Health will include the programs of the existing Department of Health Care Professions. The School of Architecture will include the Architectural Studies, Interior Design and Fashion Design and Merchandising Programs. The School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies will include programs in the existing Department of Information Management Systems as well as Fire Science Management and Advanced Technical Studies. The School of Transportation will include Automotive Technology, Aviation Flight, Aviation Management, and Aviation Technologies.

We expect the transition from departments to schools to be completed by May, 2005, for all schools except the School of Transportation, which will require additional time since three independent departments are involved in this merger. The target date for the completion of the School of Transportation transition is December, 2005.

The College faculty and staff were enormously helpful in the reorganization process. The reorganization will help us further reduce administrative costs as well as promote cooperative research and programmatic efforts.

One of the goals of the Southern at 150 strategic plan is to “develop streamlined, agile administrative structures.” We believe the CASA reorganization represents one important step in addressing this most important goal.

In the meantime, if you have questions or wish more information, or plan a visit to the campus, please let me know by e-mailing psarvela@siu.edu or telephoning 618-536-6682.

Thank you for your continuing support of the SIUC College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The DawgZooka is Introduced to Saluki Fans

The World's only DawgZooka shooting t-shirts at the SIUC Arena. The world's only DawgZooka – a remote-controlled robotic air cannon that can fire projectiles several hundred feet – made its premiere appearance at the SIUC Arena during half time of the November 21 game, when it blasted five t-shirts, one at a time, far into the upper deck seating areas, to the delight of chanting fans.

Nate Dovovan rams another Saluki shirt into the barrel of the Dawgzooka as he and Kurt Eickelberg (right) prepare to fire the souvenir into the nosebleed seats of the SIU Arena. The Dawgzooka which was constructed by the students of the Electronic Systems Technologies of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, makes its appearance during halftime at most home basketball games. SIUC General Motors Alumni Launch Scholarship Initiative

SIUC Alumni employed by General Motors Corporation have taken the initiative to launch a fundraising campaign to establish the GM SIUC Alumni AutoTech Scholarship Fund to benefit students in the College’s Department of Automotive Technology.

We naturally hope that alumni at other firms which have significant contingents of alumni employees will undertake similar campaigns to benefit students in CASA programs.

CASA and the SIU Foundation offer a wide range of assistance with respect to fundraising by alumni groups, including the following:

  • Development of alumni e-mail and postal address lists.
  • Authoring, design, printing and distribution (e-mail) / mailing of fundraising materials.
  • Gift accounting and acknowledgement.

For more information, please e-mail michaele@siu.edu or telephone 618-536-6682.
