Flying Salukis Place 4th in the Nation!
 
 


The Flying Salukis, the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) member competitive flying team that represents Southern Illinois University Carbondale, placed fourth overall and third in ground events and in the Judge's Trophy competition in the most recent NIFA national meet. This meet was held at the end of April, 2004, in Tennessee. Leading the team was senior Michael Coffman of Maquon, IL. He won the national title in the SCAN or Simulated Comprehensive Area Navigation event and also placed seventh in navigation and ninth in computer accuracy. Others placing in the top ten in an event were Adam Herbert, Tim Staab, Matt Clevenger, Bill Gersch, Todd Yakel, Travis Custer and Doug Gibbs. Doug Gibbs and Tim Staab were this year's team co-captains. The Flying Salukis earlier won the Midwest Regional NIFA event to qualify for the Nationals.
