From the Dean

My first e-newsletter comments after having been named permanent dean of the College, must be to thank all of those who have been so helpful and supportive during my tenure as interim dean.

You consistently have demonstrated your respect for the traditions of the College and your belief in its future. I naturally share your pride and confidence for many reasons. For example. . .

• Graduates of the college’s highly-rated aviation and automotive programs continue to be in high demand by firms throughout the country;
• Dental program faculty and students have participated in programs to provide free and low-cost dental care to residents of Southern Illinois and rural Mexico;
• 100 percent of the most recent graduates of the Physician Assistant Program passed their national exams by scoring in the 99th percentile, compared to national averages of 83 and 54, respectively.
• The Flying Salukis finished fourth in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Championships, besting the University of Illinois and the US Naval and Air Force Academies;
• A student-designed robot from the College’s Electronics Systems Technologies Program defeated robots from the University of Massachusetts and the University of California Berkley;
• Students in the College’s Department of Architecture and Interior Design are preparing recommendations for the City of Vancouver Planning Department with respect to the development of an 80 acre, 2400 unit sustainable residential community.

College faculty, administrators and I are planning informal meetings in various regions throughout the country in the next few months to tell you even more about the College’s accomplishments and initiatives, including the $40 Million Transportation Education Center, which is now in the design and engineering stage.

In the meantime, if you have questions or wish more information, or plan a visit to the campus, please let me know by e-mailing psarvela@siu.edu or telephoning 618-536-6682.

Thank you for your continuing support of the SIUC College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Paul Sarvela
Dean

Paul D. Sarvela named permanent dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts

"I am confident that Paul will continue to lead the College of Applied Sciences and Arts with the same degree of skill, enthusiasm and commitment he has shown over the past 20 months," SIUC Provost John Dunn said. "He has done an outstanding job, and I know he will continue to further enhance the college's national recognition." More...

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale supporters can now officially become "licensed Salukis" with the availability of SIUC license plates.

The plate design features the distinctive outline of Pulliam Hall's clock tower and the school colors, maroon and white. There is a three-fold purpose to the plates: Build goodwill for the University, help clarify the institution's identity and raise money for undergraduate scholarships. more...

MICHAEL ELLIS
Director of Advancement

A huge thanks to donors, department chairs, program directors, faculty, staff and Dean Sarvela for helping increase fiscal year 2004 fund raising revenue for the College by a whopping 126 percent over fiscal year 2003! This astonishing increase reflects a 19.3 percent increase in cash contributions and an amazing 184 percent increase in the value of gifts-in-kind.

Thanks, also, to the players, sponsors, contributors, gift-in-kind donors and volunteers who helped make the June 25 College golf outing at the beautiful Stone Creek Golf Course the most successful in the history of the College.

This level of support is extremely gratifying and encouraging, and will go far to help the College maintain its traditional commitment to excellence and to providing – through scholarships and other financial assistance – opportunities for students to learn and dream, that many may otherwise be denied.

As state government support for SIUC and every other public university in Illinois continues to decline – and operating costs continue to increase – the College will have no choice but to depend more and more on individual, corporate, organization and foundation donors.

The College is very fortunate to have so many in its corner.
